National Community Church's
Week of Justice
March 26th - 31st
On March 26, National Community Church will launch a Week of Justice, with events scheduled throughout the DC area. The purpose of the week is primarily to educate the church body and members of the community about God’s heart for justice. Secondarily, it will highlight the work God is already doing in D.C. and around the world to restore justice to His people through acts of love. Finally, the week will provide opportunities for people to gather together prayerfully to lift up these works, as well as to join in these movements with their own actions and involvement.
Sunday March 26: WOJ Kick-off – Think Globally, Act Locally, Pray Continually
7:00 PM– Ebenezer’s Coffeehouse – 201 F Street, NE.
In the context of prayer and worship, we will discuss the connections between justice issues addressed throughout the week, as well as provide practical information and resources to help us all live out God's love and justice. We will pray for areas of injustice and celebrate through worship those areas in which we are involved and experience the power of Christ.
Monday March 27: Local Poverty: God’s children in Need
7:00 PM - Little Lights – 760 7th St. SE, DC
The focus of these presentations will be the evidence of injustice in our local community. NCC members involved with In-Service will address some causes and misconceptions of homelessness. We will also contrast local economic levels and some of the problems this creates within the city. Members involved in social work and inner-city ministry will provide insight into these issues, as well as highlight ways that we can all be involved in sharing God's love throughout the city.
Tuesday March 28: The Struggle to End Human Trafficking
7:00 PM– Adoption Resource Center – 1006 6th St. NW, DC
Along with representatives from Restoration Ministries and Shared Hope, we will examine the realities faced by millions of children and adults living in forced prostitution, slavery, and torture. Presentations will be made highlighting both international and local DC trafficking. We will examine, discuss, and pray for these issues and learn more about contributing to these forms of injustice.
Wednesday March 29: HIV/AIDS: The Real Bio-Terror
7:00 PM – Central United Methodist Church – Fairfax Dr./Stuart St., Arlington
News of the bird flu has nations around the world allocating billions to research and control the virus, but HIV continues to wreak havoc in Africa, India, and Europe (over 40 million are infected to date!) with limited media coverage. Right here in DC, infection rates are at 5% HIV+, the same rate as in Kenya. To learn more, we will view the movie "A Closer Walk," which discusses the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS in a very approachable and discussable way. After viewing the film, we will discuss our roles as Christians living out the healing message of Christ in the world. We will also pray for those infected and affected by the virus here and abroad.
Thursday March 30: Global Poverty and Our Response
7:00 PM – Toscana Grille – 2300 Clarendon Blvd., Arlington
A number of factors play into the separation of rich and poor in our world, including debt, famine, and political chaos. We will look into these issues and begin asking questions. "Why does half of the world live on less than $1 a day?" "Why does one out of four children in war-torn Africa die before the age of five?" "Why are there so many refugees in the world, including in our own neighborhoods?" "What can we do the show Christ's love to the 'least of these' in our world?" " How can we begin to pray for such massive issues?"
Friday March 31: Film: “Sing”- by John Scanlon
7:00 PM– Ebenezer’s Coffeehouse – 201 F Street, NE.
Friday night, the film addressing situations in Uganda will be premiered at Ebenezer’s Coffeehouse. Along with the film, a community discussion forum will take place to look at key verses in Scripture where God shares His heart and vision for justice. Grab a cup of coffee and join in as we conclude our Week of Justice.
